The Sett Valley Trail is a gentle and scenic route that connects New Mills and Hayfield along a former railway line — offering a peaceful 2.5-mile walk or cycle through the heart of the Peak District.

Ideal for families, cyclists, and casual walkers, this flat trail is a perfect way to enjoy countryside views without venturing too far into the hills.
Once part of the Manchester to Hayfield railway, the line closed in 1970 and was converted into a multi-use trail. Today, it provides a level, well-surfaced path suitable for walking, cycling, wheelchairs, and pushchairs.

You’ll pass through woodlands, open fields, and small hamlets, with easy access to nature, wildlife, and two charming towns at either end.

Whether you’re up for a stroll or a relaxed bike ride, the trail is perfect for all ages. Its smooth, well-kept surface makes it suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs too. You can walk the full trail one way and catch public transport back if needed.

The hedgerows and woodland are home to birds, butterflies, and small mammals. In spring, don’t miss Bluebell Woodnear New Mills — a colourful carpet of flowers lining the path.

There are benches and grassy areas near both ends of the trail. The Hayfield side has a few open spaces where you can picnic with a view of the valley.

The Sett Valley Trail is fully accessible, with a flat, smooth path throughout. Suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs, mobility scooters, and bikes. Benches and toilets are available at both ends of the trail.

From the Hayfield end of the trail, you can access the Pennine paths that lead up to Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District. This is a steep and challenging hike but offers dramatic views and moorland scenery for experienced walkers.
