Three Shires Head, where the counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire meet, is a remote and picturesque spot famous for its ancient stone packhorse bridge, cascading waterfalls, and tranquil pools. Hidden along the River Dane, it’s a favourite destination for walkers, photographers, and wild swimmers looking for one of the Peak District’s most iconic natural settings.

Three Shires Head is reached by foot via several scenic routes:
Paths are uneven and may be muddy, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

The pools beneath the waterfalls are popular for wild swimming in warmer months. Water is cold year-round and can be slippery underfoot, so swim with caution and only if confident in outdoor water conditions.
The stone bridge framed by flowing water makes this one of the most photographed locations in the Peaks. Best light is early morning or late afternoon, and each season offers distinct colours and atmosphere.
Flat grassy areas along the riverbank provide peaceful places to enjoy lunch with the sound of rushing water in the background.

A must-see near The Roaches, Lud’s Church is a deep, atmospheric chasm formed by a landslip. It’s a mystical site with historical significance, rumored to have been a secret meeting place for worship during the Reformation. The cool, mossy walls and the dramatic setting make it a fascinating addition to any Roaches hike.
